FPM Strategy 2026-28
Welcome to your Professional Home
We are proud to present our strategy for 2026–28. This is a commitment from us to our members and the wider pharmaceutical medicine community, that FPM will continue to grow as your professional home. Together, we are building a modern community where pharmaceutical physicians feel connected, supported, and inspired to shape the future of our specialty.
The strategy sets the direction for the 2026-28 period, and reflects members’ feedback, the challenges facing our profession, and the opportunities ahead.
Our Strategic Vision
We want every pharmaceutical physician to have a professional home that recognises their expertise, strengthens their identity, and equips them to advance health. Our strategy for 2026–28 sets out four objectives, translated into four pillars, which will guide everything we do. They are designed to reflect what matters most to our community and to make FPM a home that is supportive, outward-looking, and resilient.
Our Objectives
Promoting a Shared Professional Identity
Build recognition of pharmaceutical medicine as a distinct, valued medical specialty and strengthen the sense of belonging for all members.
Extending Reach and Increasing Influence
Ensure FPM’s voice is heard in national and international debates on medicines, health policy, and innovation.
Nurturing Ideation and Innovation
Support members to lead responsibly in fast-changing areas like new therapies, technologies, and clinical trial approaches.
Using Good Governance to Underpin Resilience
Strengthen transparency, accountability, and organisational capacity so FPM can remain fit for the future.
The Four Pillars
Identity
Strengthening our shared professional identity as pharmaceutical physicians.
FPM will celebrate the diversity of our members, support career-long professional development, and raise awareness of pharmaceutical medicine as a vital medical specialty.
Why this matters:
Too often our specialty is under-recognised. A strong professional identity helps ensure that our skills and expertise are visible and valued by the public, patients, and health systems.
How you’ll see it in practice:
- A review of membership to ensure our grades value proposition reflects modern practice.
- Introduction of digital credentials and new member pathways.
- Campaigns showcasing member stories and celebrating achievements.
Influence
Amplifying the voice of pharmaceutical medicine and extending FPM’s reach.
We will bring the expertise of pharmaceutical physicians to the centre of national and global health debates. Our influence will be visible in policy, regulation, research, and in the wider conversation about medicines.
Why this matters:
Health policy and medical innovation need expert voices. Our influence ensures that medicines are developed, regulated, and used in ways that truly benefit patients and society.
How you’ll see it in practice:
- Proactive engagement in national and international consultations on medicines, health policy, and innovation.
- Increased media engagement to raise the profile of pharmaceutical medicine.
- White Paper series addressing critical issues in medicines and innovation.
Innovation
Nurturing and leading innovation across the medicines lifecycle.
From AI in clinical trials to novel therapies, FPM will help members navigate and shape rapid change. Our aim is to ensure innovation is harnessed responsibly, ethically, and with patient benefit at its core.
Why this matters:
Innovation is accelerating. Without the expertise of pharmaceutical physicians, the promise of new therapies and technologies risks being unevenly realised or misunderstood.
How you’ll see it in practice:
- Launch of an Innovation Advisory Group (Sep 2026).
- Commissioning research reports to inform debate and guide members.
- Events and webinars showcasing innovation in action.
Governance
Strengthening the foundations of FPM as an organisation.
We will build trust and confidence through clear governance, transparency, and stronger support for our volunteers. This ensures that FPM is resilient, effective, and ready for the future.
Why this matters:
A professional home must be stable, accountable, and sustainable. Good governance is what allows us to serve our members and influence the world around us.
How you’ll see it in practice:
- Embedding the outcomes of our governance review to ensure FPM is modern, resilient, and aligned with best practice.
- New volunteer management strategy to support and value those who give their time.
- Introducing clearer ways of communicating governance decisions to members.
How We Will Deliver
This strategy is not fixed – it will evolve with your input and our shared ambitions. In its first year you’ll see it come to life through:
