We have undertaken a major membership project to ensure that what we offer our members remains relevant, valuable and responsive to the needs of pharmaceutical physicians at every stage of their careers.

This work will help us strengthen our position as the professional home for pharmaceutical physicians by building a clearer understanding of what members value most, what motivates engagement, and how we can better support professionals working in an evolving healthcare and pharmaceutical environment.

Progress so far

As part of this project, we launched the Voices of Pharmaceutical Medicine Survey on 21 May 2026.

The survey was distributed to both members and non-members and generated a strong response, with more than 500 professionals across the field sharing their views and experiences. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to participate.

What we are hearing

Early analysis is now underway, and while it is too soon to draw firm conclusions, some initial themes are beginning to emerge from the data.

Members appear to value FPM not just for specific benefits or services, but as a source of professional identity, recognition and community.

Preliminary findings suggest that training and qualifications, professional standards, and networking opportunities are among the aspects most closely associated with membership. There are also consistent mentions of the importance of revalidation support and access to CPD.

When asked about challenges in their professional lives, respondents are raising themes around navigating a rapidly evolving field, the need for greater recognition of pharmaceutical medicine as a specialty, and the importance of balancing professional standards with the realities of day-to-day practice.

These are early impressions from an ongoing analysis process, and the picture will develop considerably as the research progresses.

What happens next?

The next phase of the project will involve a series of focus groups and discussion sessions, providing an opportunity to explore key themes from the survey in greater depth.

These conversations will help us better understand the experiences, priorities and expectations of both current and prospective members. They will also allow us to test emerging ideas and ensure that future recommendations are informed directly by the voices of the pharmaceutical medicine community.

Following this phase, insights from the research will be used to refine FPM’s membership offer, communications and engagement approach. Members will have further opportunities to comment on emerging proposals before recommendations are finalised.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone who has completed the survey and to those who have signed up to participate in our upcoming focus groups. Your time, insights and willingness to share your experiences are invaluable.

Every survey response, focus group discussion and piece of feedback helps build a clearer picture of what pharmaceutical physicians need from their professional home, both today and in the future. Members will remain at the centre of this process, the future of FPM membership will be shaped by the experiences, priorities and perspectives of the pharmaceutical medicine community.

We look forward to continuing this conversation as the project progresses.

About the Membership Project

The Membership Project is a key part of the FPM Strategy 2026 to 2028 and supports FPM’s the Faculty’s wider modernisation agenda.

The environment in which pharmaceutical physicians work is changing rapidly. Professional expectations are evolving, regulatory requirements continue to develop, and the pharmaceutical industry is becoming increasingly global. In response, FPM we are reviewing how membership can continue to meet the needs of today’s professionals while remaining relevant for future generations of pharmaceutical physicians.

The project will be delivered through a series of phases lasting two to three years between 2026 and 2028, with member engagement at the heart of every stage.
