We are pleased to share a new Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) FORUM report titled Regulating AI and computational models in clinical trials.
The report was published following a September 2025 roundtable which was attended by several FPM-affiliated stakeholders including Dr Felix Jackson FFPM and Dr Kirsty Wydenbach FFPM, Chairs of FPM’s New Technologies Expert Group and Clinical Trial Science and Regulations Expert Group, respectively.

The Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) recently published a report on regulating AI and computational models in clinical trials following a FORUM roundtable that I attended as FPM NTEG Chair. The fundamental principles were not new (such as balancing innovation with patient safety), but the fascinating discussion showed me how the AMS, Regulatory Innovation Office (RIO), Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Centres of Excellence for Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSIs) seem to have all identified the opportunity for the UK to be the leader. And, how this can actually be achieved through collaboration with innovators to develop guidance and risk-proportionate frameworks. Read the report to find out more!

I had the privilege of joining this workshop and it was certainly thought provoking. MHRA and industry experts really set the scene for what was already happening with AI and where the opportunities lie that could really shape the future of clinical trials in the UK. Several aspects stand out to me, including the balance of building trust by communicating openly and transparently, whilst also being pioneering and innovative. These fit with FPM values and strategic vision, and AI is a key area where FPM can influence and drive the coming changes.
