FPM membership highlights of 2018

2018 has seen several notable achievements for the FPM and for our specialty of pharmaceutical medicine, and your subscription has been vital in supporting this.

  • Pharmaceutical Medical Training (PMST) reached a milestone of 350 physicians who have completed the programme, and there are currently 120 trainees enrolled.
  • Our two headline events - FPM Education Day and our Annual Symposium - both sold out and earned excellent reviews from attendees. They also attracted our first event sponsors.
  • We recently established several expert groups to act on our behalf in producing intellectually rigorous and timely responses to press releases, consultations and publications. The groups are made up of FPM members who have expert knowledge within key areas, and the Oncology expert group have already responded to a recent letter in the BMJ and the Policy expert group submitted a response in December to an urgent consultation on supply and the UK's exit from the EU.
  • We submitted and jointly contributed to several major consultations and inquiries including consultations on the effects of a no-deal Brexit, one for the MHRA and the other for the Health and Social Care Select Committee at the House of Commons.
  • Alongside the ABPI and Pfizer, we advised on the development of the drug discovery and development programme at the Brighton and Sussex medical school – a landmark programme that will introduce undergraduate students to the core aspects of pharmaceutical medicine from their very first year of study.
  • The Royal College of Physicians asked us to produce a document for clinical doctors to help them better understand the ABPI Code of Practice for the Pharmaceutical Industry. Our ‘Engaging with the pharmaceutical industry and what this means for clinicians’ document was presented at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in November and received a positive response with interest from the other colleges to get involved in this project.
  • We hosted two lively appraiser networking sessions. These gave a forum for attendees to share working methods and ensured that the highest principles are maintained in the appraisal process for our 600 members who have a prescribed connection to the FPM for revalidation.
  • 41 candidates sat Part 1 and 42 candidates sat Part 2 of the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine exam in 2018, many of whom take the Diploma as part of the PMST programme.
  • We have developed our digital communications capabilities and now boast a LinkedIn page that is more active than ever as well as a new YouTube channel, via which we are able to promote the FPM and our specialty in new ways and to new audiences.

Looking forward to 2019, members will start to see our new strategy come into effect, and we already have an exciting and varied programme of events and projects across the spectrum of pharmaceutical medicine planned.

Membership subscriptions are essential in supporting our work and we hope you will continue your membership for the year to come.
