Seeking members for FPM’s new Membership Committee

FPM’s Board of Trustees have approved the formation of a new committee focusing exclusively on our membership.  This committee has a challenging remit and will focus on growing our membership, extending and improving the benefits and services we provide, and reviewing the types of membership we offer along with their associated entitlements and privileges.

Committee terms of reference

  • Consider and approve applications for Membership, Associateship and Affiliateship of the FPM on behalf of the Board of Trustees
  • Support the professional welfare of FPM members
  • Oversee the development of member networks and member networking events
  • Oversee the guidance and support provided to doctors considering a career in pharmaceutical medicine
  • Consider potential strategies and opportunities for increasing membership
  • Consider the need for new membership categories as well as re-evaluating the entitlements and privileges of current membership categories, and when required, make proposals to the Board regarding the rules governing membership
  • Report annually to the Board of Trustees on the activities of the Committee and bring to the Board’s attention matters requiring the Board’s approval

This committee is chaired by the Registrar and will work closely with FPM’s Head of Membership and Operations and the Membership and Events Manager.

Main responsibilities of a Committee member

  • Attend committee meetings, either in person or by video conferencing
  • Actively contribute to the work of the committee
  • Participate in communications by email / telephone in between meetings as required
  • Undertake other activities on behalf of the committee and FPM as agreed
  • Act in compliance with the FPM’s Governing Documents and Procedures
  • Follow the guidance set out in the FPM’s committee guidance documents
  • Act in compliance with the FPM’s Policies including its Code of Conduct and Equal Opportunities Policy
  • Act in compliance with FPM’s values

Appointment

The method of appointment is open advertisement from the membership of FPM of Pharmaceutical Medicine. A person specification is provided below. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to meet an appointment committee which will be chaired by the Registrar.


Tenure

Committee members normally serve for a period of three years. This can be extended to a maximum of six years if re-appointed. Committee members may be asked to step down from the group if they are not able to attend meetings or contribute to the work of the group satisfactorily.


 

Time Commitment

It is anticipated that there will be four two-hour meetings per year, two in-person and two by video conferencing.  There will be additional time commitments involved in supporting the work of the Committee in between committee meetings but it is difficult to be prescriptive about the extent of this.


Confidentiality

Information relating to committee business must be kept confidential unless otherwise agreed by FPM.


Expenses

FPM will reimburse travel and subsistence costs arising from reasonable attendance at FPM meetings and events under the terms of the FPM’s Expense Claim Policy.


Person specification

As part of your application, please provide details and examples of how you meet these criteria:

Essential

  • In good standing with the relevant medical registration body (e.g. GMC)
  • Current Fellow, Member, Associate or Affiliate of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine in good standing

Desirable

  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of achievement and contributions to the specialty of Pharmaceutical Medicine
  • Currently undergoing revalidation
