The Faculty's Annual Symposium this year was on the theme of adherence to medicines. For the first time the symposium took place in the conference centre of the Wellcome Collection - a pleasant and convenient venue with a close association for pharmaceutical physicians!
Some 140 delegates enjoyed a full day of presentations and discussions, chaired by the newly elected President of the Faculty, Dr Keith Bragman. Speakers covered topics as diverse as: How pharmaceutical physicians can best take account of adherence in drug development, how patient communications and patient information leaflets can be enhanced to boost adherence, how can we best measure adherence, how can patients' beliefs in their medicines be enhanced, and how can pharmaceutical physicians collaborate with allied professions, such as pharmacy, to improve adherence.
The symposium concluded with a roundtable, chaired by Mr Harry Cayton (Chief Executive, Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care), during which the speakers were joined by Sir Richard Thompson (President, RCP), Sir Gordon Duff (incoming Chairman, MHRA) and Dr Samantha Walker (Asthma UK). The group started to draw together potential outputs from the meeting and discussed where the Faculty, in association with partner organisations, can begin to influence change.
Sir Rory Collins gave a presentation on the UK Biobank. Download Sir Rory's presentation slides
