Revalidation - Draft Specialty Specific Standards

Introduction

As part of the development of revalidation, all colleges and faculties have been asked to draft specialty specific standards for revalidation. The draft standards for pharmaceutical medicine are now available on the Faculty website.

Background

Each specialty's standards are very closely linked to a GMC framework that adapts Good Medical Practice to four domains. The standards for pharmaceutical medicine and the suggested supporting information have been developed to assist doctors to prepare for revalidation. They will be applicable to all doctors with a GMC Licence to Practise who practise pharmaceutical medicine, whether on the specialist register or not.

It is important to note that doctors will only need to provide supporting information relevant to their current areas of work. The wide range of roles that pharmaceutical physicians have make the document very lengthy. In addition to the main standards framework for pharmaceutical medicine there is a set of four supplementary frameworks which may be relevant to revalidation for some pharmaceutical physicians.

These supplementary frameworks, applicable to all medical specialties, have been developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and relate to Medical Management, Medical Education, Medical Research and Specialist Expertise.

Depending upon the nature of a pharmaceutical physician's role he or she may also need to provide supporting information against the relevant sections of one or more of the supplementary frameworks in addition to the relevant sections of the pharmaceutical medicine framework. It is anticipated that a single piece of supporting information may relate to a number of standards across one or more of the relevant frameworks.
